Trending visas to reside in Spain

Are you familiar with the most in-demand visas to legally settle in the country?

We provide clear and up-to-date information so you can take the first step with confidence.

Globalization and advances in new technologies have made it possible for many people to develop their professional lives remotely, turning the idea of settling in idyllic destinations into an increasingly realistic and achievable option. In this context, Spain has positioned itself as one of the preferred countries to take this step, with the Costa Blanca standing out as one of the most sought-after areas, thanks to its excellent climate, renowned gastronomy, and a relaxed lifestyle that invites you to enjoy everyday life.

There are currently several popular visas for residing in Spain. Below, we present the most relevant ones and their main features:

Non-Lucrative Visa

The non-lucrative visa is designed for individuals who wish to reside in Spain without engaging in any employment or professional activities within the country. It is a very popular option among retirees and people with savings or stable passive income.

Main features:

      • Does not allow you to work in Spain.

      • Allows investment and property purchase.

      • Requires proof of sufficient financial means to support yourself during your stay (Main applicant: approx. 400% of the annual IPREM and approx. 100% of the annual IPREM for each additional family member).

      • Renewable and may lead to long-term residence.

      • Must be applied for in the country of origin (Spanish consulate); it cannot initially be applied for from Spain.

Who can apply?

Individuals with income from abroad, such as pensions, rental income, investments, or sufficient demonstrable savings. As an additional note, although it does not authorize work, it does allow studying and living legally in Spain together with immediate family members.

Digital Nomad Visa

The digital nomad visa is one of the most recent and in-demand options. It emerged in response to the growth of remote work and allows you to reside in Spain while working for foreign companies or developing online professional projects.

Main features:

      • Authorizes remote work from Spain.

      • Offers tax benefits in certain cases.

      • Can be applied for either from the country of origin or directly from Spain.

Who can apply?

Professionals working remotely, freelancers, or employees of foreign companies who can demonstrate stable income and professional experience.

Work Visa

The work visa, whether for employment or self-employment (freelancers), is intended for those who wish to carry out a professional activity or start a business in Spain.

Main features:

      • Allows you to work legally in Spain.

      • In the case of self-employment, a viable business plan must be submitted, along with proof of financial means, relevant qualifications, and any required licenses or permits.

      • Allows contributions to the Social Security system and access to labor and healthcare rights.

      • Renewable and may lead to long-term residence.

      • The initial authorization is applied for from the country of origin (for self-employed applicants) or from Spain (for employed workers with a job offer).

Who can apply?

Individuals with a job offer in Spain or entrepreneurs who wish to start their own project, proving the investment and business viability.

Before starting any visa application, it is essential to be properly informed and to plan the process in advance.

We recommend consulting the official website of the Embassies and Consulates of Spain corresponding to your country of residence, under the Consular Services section, as each office sets specific requirements regarding documentation, language, fees, and appointment systems.

Additionally, document preparation often requires official translations and, in many cases, legalization or apostille of certificates, degrees, and criminal records. For this reason, we suggest starting the process well in advance, as both document collection and consular appointments may take several weeks or even months, especially during periods of high demand.
